People often want to help a grieving friend but worry about saying the wrong thing. A simple expression of care and a specific offer of practical help are usually more useful than a long explanation.
Keep words simple
Say that you are sorry, use the person’s name if the family welcomes it, and listen. Avoid comparing losses or telling someone how they should feel.
Offer a concrete task
Bring a meal, handle an errand, walk a dog, drive someone to an appointment, or make a call. “I can bring dinner on Thursday” is easier to answer than “Let me know if you need anything.”
Continue after the funeral
Support often becomes quiet after the first weeks. Put a reminder on your calendar to check in, remember an important date, or invite the person without pressure.
