Traditional burial often follows a visitation and funeral ceremony. A graveside service places the primary gathering at the cemetery. A direct burial, when selected and available, generally takes place without a preceding formal ceremony at the funeral home.

The right structure depends on the family’s traditions, the person’s wishes, timing, travel, and how relatives want to participate. The funeral director will explain what each path includes before selections are finalized.

A graveside service may follow a funeral procession or serve as the principal ceremony. The family can discuss clergy or a celebrant, readings, prayers, music where practical, pallbearers, military honors, flowers permitted by the cemetery, and who will participate in the committal.

Cemetery conditions, weather, accessibility, seating, sound, and timing can affect the plan. Blair-Mazzarella coordinates the confirmed details with the cemetery and other participants.

Caskets vary by material, construction, finish, interior, dimensions, personalization, and availability. The selection should support the service, fit the cemetery’s requirements, and be deliverable within the confirmed schedule.

Some cemeteries require a grave liner or burial vault; others do not. These outer burial containers are separate from the casket. The funeral director will review the cemetery’s current requirement and the verified products available through Blair-Mazzarella.

Green or natural burial generally seeks to reduce certain materials and interventions. It may involve a biodegradable casket or shroud, but the selected cemetery decides what it permits, whether an outer container is required, and how the grave is prepared and marked.

Because product construction and cemetery policies differ, a simple-looking wooden casket should not automatically be described as green-burial appropriate. Verify both the merchandise and the cemetery before deciding.
